Awesome Plane

It's a bit disturbing to myself that after I saw the link for this on a bulletin board I couldn't stop laughing. Quite sad actually.

Pete Table Almost Finished

Sanded the top and connected it to the base with homeade wooden clips. Of course, nothing could happen without some incident - 3 screws came up into the top. (Why can't things go smoothly once in a while?)
Anyway, got a coat of boiled linseed oil on it, and will proceed to put a couple coats of shellac on it later in the week.

Old Windows

The past 3 weeks have been dedicated to installing 5 new windows. It's not really woodworking per se, but there's quite a bit of working wood involved, mostly demolishing small bits and pieces of the old frame to get the new ones in.

I've read all the exhortations, mostly in Old House Journal, about keeping up old windows, but I couldn't possibly see how this would benefit the home in any way. Most of the sashes were rotting - and there was absolutely no isulation to be found.

We bought nice new fir windows from Loewen. They're really nice, and of course double paned. Once the trim went back on they started looking a lot better, but it was looking sketchy when there was expanding foam coming out everywhere.

Blast From the Past

Who says that in the past craftmanship was always top notch?!?! While getting the windows ready for the past two weekends (hence no woodworking....), I had to take off the existing trim.
On one of the windows the trim wasn't quite flush to the plaster wall. To make up for this, rather than fix the plaster a former worker (or homeowner) decided the best thing to do would be to shim it up with some balled up newspaper. Classy!!! However, it turned out to be something of a time machine....

I kind of thought that perhaps the windows weren't original, and now this sort of answers that question. No way anyone else could have removed this trim before without disturbing the old 'stuffing'. I hope I won't be this lazy on the install!
